F&BMA President’s Message 2009

This economic crisis opens a new era for all.  As you all know, the present world situation is characterized by the worst economic scenario and it will be another challenging three to five more years before the economy gets better.

We must not hold fast to past achievements which are history.  Instead, we must all own a proactive attitude and an increased sense of responsibility necessary to not only stay afloat in this present economic climate but also to confront the challenging months and years ahead.

Especially during such economic climate, staying involved in continuing education is also important. Relevant coursework in new job skills, especially computers and software applications, are a must-have for today's job hunter, employees and many recession-resistant jobs require extensive postsecondary education. Most importantly, however, one should never fail to maintain a positive attitude.

Despite challenging times, this is a good opportunity to diversify, gain more experience, be innovative and flexible. It is time to use not some, but all, of the skills acquired throughout your education and professional experience.  Change can be good.

As the association commits itself to serve, protect and promote the common interests of our membership and the hospitality service industry, it is our responsibility to continue in our pursuit of our vision in building a future with a foundation nurtured with competitive zeal and dedication for our members.   The association also encourages its members to reach out to the community so that we can all continue to grow as individuals contributing achievements and experiences in our own unique ways.

As the association looks forward to its second decade of service, it will, as always, show more signs of change. It will always have many ramifications in developing initiatives.  And, that reminds me to highlight that amidst our busy lives, do not forget to figure out a better work-life balance for yourself and your family.  This is an initiative that the government is now aggressively promoting despite the economic gloom and doom.  For those who have attended the dinner workshop in late February this year, I hope it has been beneficial for you.

Lastly, thank you to our business associates, industry friends and members for your continuous support and friendship.  On behalf of the association, may I wish you a very happy and healthy new year!

Sincerely yours,

Cheong Hai Poh

President, F&BMA Main Wing

Dear All,

I would like to first extend my deepest appreciation to each and every one of you for giving me this opportunity to serve the association at the helm the F&BMA Youth Wing. I am extremely grateful, in particular, to Mr. Cheong and his Executive Committee members for their kind support and mentorship to me and my team.

It had been a year of ups and downs for the Youth Wing. Being a fresh new bud in this vast forest, it had not been easy for us to cope with and handle the magnitude and significance of our projects and commitments; but I am proud, and will always be, of the tremendous dedication put forth by my team members.

I would also like to take this chance to give my sincere gratitude to our advisors who have, in spite of their full time commitments, been a great aid to my team. With a new advisor, Mr. Ernie Ong, dedicating his precious time and experience to us, it would be another year of precious tutorage for us. So thank you, Mr. Ernie Ong, Mr. Ettore Palazzi and Mr. Tan Hsien Wei, for your assistance rendered.

I am honoured to have served the Youth Wing as the President since its formation in late 2006. Though a short 15 months or so since its induction into the Food & Beverage Managers' Association, the Youth Wing and her members have gained much valued experience and exposure to the F&B industry of Singapore. We have been given constant opportunities to lead, practice and understand how it is like to be in this industry. We hope that, in line with our goals, we can encourage more youths and stir their interest in the service and hospitality industry. The industry is booming and constantly improving through these years and this can only be good news for us. With so much publicity garnered due to the upcoming Integrated Resorts and other hospitality facilities, more people would see the prospects in this industry and we want to create a high standard and professionalism for these potential leaders of the hospitality industry.

With a year ahead packed full of activities for the Youth Wing, my team had decided to expand our Executive Committee and I would like to wish the best for these new committee members and I hope to have a good working relationship with each and every one of you. May we keep this passion to serve going strong and steady, and we will enjoy this experience of a lifetime!

With a strong demand from our members in site visits to various hospitality facilities in the country, our team had lined up a series of these visits to the likes of Amara Sanctuary, Sentosa Golf Club, Indoguna and the recently concluded Conrad Centennial site visit. With positive feedback and response from last year, we are also very excited to bring back the FB-Mazing Race and Christmas Party this year for our Youth Wing members. Of course, the Youth Wing would also be rendering our assistance to events like Food and Hotel Asia 2008 and the F&BMA Annual Dinner 2008. We would also hope to once again, push ourselves and expand the association and increase our membership numbers significantly, having aimed to recruit members from more institutions this year.

With that, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all my Youth Wing members for their constant support of our events; for without them, there would not be a reason for our constant efforts and commitment. My Executive Committee will, and hope to, continue serving you. So thank you, really, from the bottom of our hearts.

Have a very prosperous Lunar New Year. May your businesses soar to great heights! And for my beloved Youth Wing members, may you do well for your studies, and I promise that this would just be the beginning to a very exciting future for you!

With my deepest appreciation,

Alan Low
